Library Associate 3

LOCATION: Millington, TN

HOURS PER WEEK: Full time, 40/hours  Libr

The Library Associate 3 role is the senior role in the Library Associate job family, and likely is found in large library locations (staff over 20) and may supervise Library Associate 1s and 2s. The primary responsibility is at the circulation desk, providing excellent customer service handling and overseeing the opening of accounts, placing holds, processing interlibrary loans, handling fines, processing lost materials and problem solving patron accounts. A portion of the Library Associate 3 job may also be to process and prepare new books to be put on the shelves, removing old library materials from the collection, working with our IT department to setup and/or troubleshoot computer problems. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides customer service to patrons by greeting, providing tours and assisting patrons in all areas of the library
  • Work closely with the library team to plan, implement and promote programming activities
  • Inform library patrons of rules of conduct as necessary, and enforce those rules when appropriate
  • Receive, process, and assist with ordering books, DVDs, and other library materials
  • Communicate and work with IT department to setup and troubleshoot computer problems when necessary
  • Process damaged materials to ensure collections are maintained in a good condition
  • Assist with library opening and closing procedures• Support reference desk in assisting patrons with questions
  • May coordinate volunteers and assign duties, providing necessary training
  • Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies)
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Three years library experience preferred
  • Supervisory and/or keyholder experience preferred
  • Computer setup and basic troubleshooting experience preferred
  • Experience with library systems and databases preferred
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Multilingual speaking is a plus
  • A high degree of proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint is desired
  • Excellent customer service skills

Library Associate 2 – Children’s Program Coordinator

HOURS PER WEEK: 30

The Library Associate 2 is the mid-level position in the Library Associate job family. Under direction from management, the Library Associate 2 performs a variety of moderately complex technical and paraprofessional duties in support of various sections/functions of the library; primarily at the circulation desk. Provides customer service to library patrons.  Participation in professional development opportunities at the local, regional and state level is encouraged

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and conducts story time, arts and crafts and other programs for children and parents which encourage reading, viewing, and listening skills
  • Coordinates children’s and young adult programming with other libraries, schools, and community groups; will assist in other library outreach opportunities as needed
  • Provides service to elementary schools and community through programs such as day care story times, class visits, summer reading programs events, I Love to Read, etc.
  • Provides customer service by welcoming and registering patrons
  • Assists patrons with locating materials, using computers, or explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.)
  • Checks in and processes library materials as necessary
  • Assists with setup for other programs and oversight/supervision of tweens and teens during events
  • Provides information regarding programs, events, conference rooms, etc.
  • Shelves library materials
  • Addresses or escalates patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management
  • Performs other work as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Two years of library experience and/or experience teaching children, ages birth to 12 years
  • Basic knowledge of library systems and databases, or other computer systems preferred or other computer systems
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Multilingual speaking a plus
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings and weekends
